How to freelance over half term

This one was written in the middle of a half term, when I was determined to hang on to as much social stuff as I could but had a load of deadlines still to complete. Yes it is entirely possible to watch as the children chase each other through fields while you send out crucial reports, reorder printer paper, and fix the jam when it inevitably happens halfway through page 49. Possible, but not always fun.
In our house there’s just one teenager so WFH is easier, but we still need a plan:

• Carve the day into three: morning, afternoon, evening. Promise one of those sections to work.
• Drop off at the cinema then take your computer to a nearby cafe.
• Make sure the holiday home has WiFi.
• Does the park cafe have WiFi? Get your coats on, kids…
• Work on the plane. Work on the train. Work on the boat. Lunchtime! Back to the park.
• Limit the week to work that can be done ad-hoc, saving the office calls for the week after.
• Organise your week like a KonMari wardrobe so you know just what’s happening and when.
• Say ‘not yet’ to all the heavy jobs and ‘that’s fine’ to the manageable ones.
• Schedule in sleep – you can’t do this on half-power.
• Biscuit jar full, coffee permanently brewing, snack lunches and at least one takeout dinner.
• Send the kids to the grandparents.
• Send the teens to the shops, forget something and send them out again.
• More coffee.

You’re welcome.
